Pidurangala Rock

At close to 200 m height from ground level Pidurangala is a volcanic hill just like Sigiriya Rock rising out of a jungle. Visiting the rock commences at the ticket counter at the bottom of the hill and a nominal charge is levied to enter the temple, Pidurangala Raja Maha Viharaya beyond which is the trail up the rock. Admire the cave paintings and the large statue of the reclining Lord Buddha as you go through the temple grounds.

Although the majesty of the Pidurangala Rock may be somewhat dimmed by the Sigiriya Rock due to the grandeur associated with the rock fortress the two rocks share a great history of the era during the rule of King Kasyapa. This holy place has served as the Royal Temple of the king thus visiting these two sites, Pidurangala and Sigiriya are considered some of the most interesting things to do near Sigiriya.

Sigiriya Rock

The name Sigiriya means Lion Rock, standing at a height of nearly 200 m above ground level, the Sigiriya Rock Plateau is another volcanic hill surrounded by the jungle at which lies the ancient rock fortress that has been entered through the mouth of an enormous carved lion on the northern side of the rock. Only the feet of the carving can be witnessed now.

At present, the complex carries remnants of a ruined palace that lies amid extensive fortifications, gardens, canals, ponds, and fountains. The western wall of the fortress had been covered by frescoes depicting beautiful female figures which are admired even today though only 18 have survived. All these vividly portray the human imagination, the ingenuity of craftsmen, and the harmony the complex would have had with nature.
